I am a little over half way through this novel. I started to read the book because I am interested in historical fiction, but I have become engrossed in the book for more reasons than that. The book is about a young girl, Alessandra who is growing up in Florence during the late 1400s. The novel begins during a period of time when art and religion are abundant. This is my favorite book, no one seems to understand why, so I will finally try to explain my reasons. I took a womens’ literature class in college, and one of the books we studied was House of Mirth. I remember never speaking up about my thoughts on this book, because everything I seemed to believe about the story and characters was contradictory to the instructor’s lesson. I could not put this book down! The main character Jessie is at a crossroads, she was a housewife and mother but now her daughter is leaving for college and she is experiencing the empty next.
